When you’re planning for back to school, don’t forget the solar eclipse on August 21. At my school in Ohio, we won’t see the total eclipse but it should still be spectacular. It does take some planning ahead though. You can’t just take your class outside and look at it. I ordered these nifty solar glasses:
on ebay. They are $2.14 for 10, shipping included. So, I ordered 40 in case another teacher needed some too. Here’s the link (not affliated with me in any way) I just thought they were cute. Ebay
Epic has some videos on solar eclipses. Just search eclipse. My favorite is from The Dr. Binocs Show:
Happy (and safe) watching!
If you haven’t signed up for Epic Books, you need to right away. It’s completely free for teachers and contains 25,000 books! The books are perfect for projecting on the board for everyone to see. I’ve posted some of my favorites for use with Ohio’s standards on Changes in Motion.
I like it because you can put the books and videos into collections:
If you make student accounts, you can assign books or just have them available as text sets they can read if they want to learn more about the topic. Students can be linked to your account for free or parents can pay $7.99 a month for home access. (I just use it at school for centers, so it’s free.)
Here are some of my favorite books for Changes in Motion, although you can also search collections made by other teachers.
What I really like about these free books is that I don’t have to hunt for them in the library and since I didn’t have to pay for them, I don’t feel bad if I only use a page or two. I rarely read an entire non-fiction book to my students, I pick and choose the pages that go with the day’s lesson or activity.
I will post other text sets or collections in the future. Thanks for reading!
Get a great idea when your shopping, but you don’t know if it meets the science standard? Mastery Connect makes an app for Ohio’s Learning Standards. I use it all the time!
